Doo Wop

The poem "Doo Wop" by Kevin Young is a poem that might seem humorous because of it's title, however, there is more  to this poem than just a play on words. The poem I would believe is about inner deep feelings. The poem is about a man describing a woman he was in love with.

"Countryfied
Sudden fried

Alabama
mamma jamma"

These two stanzas from the poem state the  woman is  a southern girl from Alabama whom the man is in love with.

"Past face
Femme postale"

This stanza from the poem explains how this poem is about a girl from the man's past whom he was in love with but this woman was with other men. I believe the meaning of femme postale is relating to being heterosexual so I would assume the author meant this woman in a way was with many other men and maybe even the opposite sex.

This woman was not just any girl but she was also his pen pal. After reading the last line, I assumed this man was in love with this woman but she broke his heart.

I think this poem is quite peculiar. It is written in a way as if it would not be a depressing poem about a heartbroken man. Kevin Young's play on words at the beginning of the poem caught me off guard because I thought it was about a man describing this woman he was madly in love with that kept him off his feet. I liked how the last line in the stanza left the reader in a way shocked that this woman who loved a lot broke his heart.
