Dorothy Parker is a poet who is well known for being very rebellious. She is known for her not so lady like poetry and attacking men through her poems. She is quite different than her male contemporaries. Male contemporaries in her time wrote how great love was or the tragedy of love. Dorothy Parker, on the other hand, wrote about the realities of life and how miserable love can be. She brings the harsh reality into limelight. She is from a time where most writers feared of speaking their mind, but she was different.
Parker’s poem “Resume” brings to light not the positive reasons as to why one should live but the harsh traumatic reasons of why one should live. I enjoyed this poem very much. I liked how this poem was very different than all the poems that I have read by other female writers and male writers. Other poems usually have a deep meaning but this poem’s choice of diction is very strong. It’s has a very basic meaning to it, but the poem is very powerful at the same time.
Razors pain you;
Rivers are damp;
Acids stain you;
And drugs cause cramp.
The way she used feminine products such as razors to describe the pain and feminine pain such as cramps makes this poem even more unique. The poem not only is very meaningful but dramatic at the same time. The poem gives reason as to why one should live but this poem also gives an interpretation of the pain women face in general. As a female, women face a lot of obstacles in society, and they want to escape from it. This poem states even when women try to escape all the pain, committing suicide is even more painful.
